Todays Health Article

December 7th, 2011

Today, as the Holidays are fast approaching, it becomes more and more difficult to share your favorite recipes at those office parties, for family gatherings, and  your friends stopping by, without feeling a little guilty. Don’t you feel just a little guilty when every thing looks so good  this time of the year and everything is sugar coated. All of those favorite homemade goodies start showing up everywhere, and I almost forgot, those homemade candies. But perhaps it would be healthier for, ” Our Mental State of Mind“, if we just took this into consideration, we are just “Humans” and we indulge at times. Right! That is OK, according to most experts… but  what they are really saying is “Do not make a habit of it every day!”

If you’re planning to indulge, then now would be the time to really enjoy it!  Did I just say that! Now I believe in healthy eating, which includes foods that would surprise you, just not every day, and not every meal. Once you have gotten that Indulge out of your system, you  really need to consider the rest of the year,  keeping the taste of Holiday eating, without feeling guilty.

A Simple Solution

One solution is to keep the taste of your favorite recipes, perhaps even adding to their health value,  allowing you to relieve some of your guilt factor, and still maintain taste. Here are some of the basics for modifying your holiday recipes or any other, which  is quite simple, and can be applied anytime of the year.

You are simply reducing, replacing, substituting, and experimenting  with your recipe regarding it’s proportions, especially in the sugars and salts. Additional flavors, compliments, or seasonings should be considered. By cutting back or adding your favorite seasoning or spice will allow you to feel good about the taste, without feeling guilty.

Keeping The Taste

Some simple changes such as using nuts, I like chopped almonds, walnuts, in several dishes, can add health value, as well as variety of berries. Many recipes call for milk, use the 1%, less fat content, and  it still tastes great in those soups and g’avies. Many cheeses are actually healthy, if you do some research,  you might find them actually tasteful as well… just use in moderation. Everyone can season up, spice up, as my love for cinnamon, adds health value, and nothing there to feel guilty about. (no calories) If you are looking for moistness in that favorite baking recipe, actually some call for my favorite applesauce, to replace that butter or oil. I have  heard pears ground up (pureed) works equally well. Just make sure you are replacing equal volume or disaster will occur. Many recipes it just takes a little common sense to realize that which is going to add calories and finding that supplement that which is healthy and use less of the sugary complements such as chocolate chips in the cookies.

Special Holiday Tips

We all think we are going to eat less during the Holiday Season, but it most cases that is furthest from the truth, because everything looks good. Yes, our eyes do deceive us because that old saying “Our eyes are bigger than our Stomaches” is actually true. We eat with our eyes and depending on how fast you actually eat, the brain takes awhile to tell you were actually full many minutes ago, and now you are really stuffed!

A Chosen Solution

Well, one idea which has been shared by many, is to drink a glass of water before eating, which reduces the amount of food you will intake and it’s healthy. This same pricipal is applied with the glass of wine before dinner, which also has its health benefits, but I did say, just a glass. Choose plenty of the vegetables, green salad, meat, berries, fruit and the rest as well. The trick is to add plenty of color on the plate and eat what is healthy for you first! Thus, leaving the rest for small bites, as your getting full and the balance goes to compost pile for the garden. Now you enjoyed the taste of Holiday eating, without feeling guilty.

Todays Health Comments

Todays article could apply to all of us who need to watch our waisline, and still enjoy the Holiday Season. All foods   seems to taste better around the Holidays, and you might find yourself eating just to be eating, not because you are actually hungry. In many cases we are also not getting the exercise necessary to burn off the additional calories. If you are one of those outdoor persons, like myself, than you perhaps are heads up upon those whom get caught up watching all your favorite Christmas shows for the tenth time, or all of the football games. Nothing against those activities, I have already watch my favorite with Jimmy Stewart and watch my football team win occaisonally. The key is not to stuff your face while doing it…and if so have some almonds or bowl of popcorn.(light on the butter)

Happy Holidays  from Dj
