Todays Health Article

October 13th, 2010

Why eat more Cranberries?  The  benefits from eating cranberries are so many and with  continous research, even more benefits  may be  discovered. Some of todays health facts may be known, others may surprise you.

History Facts

The cranberry, one of only 3 fruits native to America, helped  Americans survive for hundreds of years. The cranberries were used by the Native Americans in a variety of foods, the most popular was pemmican – this was a high protein combination of crushed cranberries, dried deer meat and melted fat. They also  found use for  treating arrow wounds and as a dye for rugs and blankets.

Cultivation of the Cranberry

This began around 1816, shortly after Captain Henry Hall, of Dennis, Massachusetts, noticed that the wild cranberries in his bogs grew better when sand blew over them.  When others heard of Hall’s technique, it was quickly copied. Cranberries are a unique fruit. They, need not to be replanted, and only grow and survive under a very special combination of factors. Opposite from  popular belief, cranberries do not grow in water.Instead, they grow on vines in impermeable beds layered with sand, peat, gravel and clay. These beds, commonly known as “bogs,” were originally made by glacial deposits. Today’s health facts show  that approx. 47, 000 acres are under cultivation in the US today.

Cranberries appear to help significantly in lowering , or reducing the risk of arteriosclerosis, which can lead to heart attacks, angina and blood clots.

This  Today’s fact may surprise you. Cranberries are  known to be high in flavonoid and their anti-adhesion properties ( prevents bodily tissues that are normally separate from growing together) help reverse and reduce the amount of oral bacteria which can lead to dental plaque and periodontal (gum) disease.  Mouthwashes containing cranberries appears to significantly decrease the number of Streptococcus mutans, which causes many dental cavities. This alone should be a good reason why eating more cranberries, can be beneficial for your health.

Cranberries contain more antioxidant phenols than most commonly eaten fruits, which help protect our bodies, by stabilizing free radicals we are exposed to everyday.

Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are present in many fruits, but only the  of cranberries and blueberries have been shown to inhibit the adhesion of infection causing E. coli bacteria in the urinary tract.  Due to a natural anti-adhesion substance in cranberries, they can help ward off urinary tract and bladder infections.

Emerging research is leading us to believe that drinking cranberry juice may also have an antiviral effect on intestinal viruses.

Most peptic ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection, Helicobacterpylori. Cranberry juice has been shown to inhibit the adhesion of these bacteria to the stomach lining. With 25 million Americans suffering from peptic ulcers in their lifetime, this is a significant healthproblem with perhaps a solution… eating more cranberries.

Red Color

Cranberry Juice – Anthocyanins are phytochemicalsnaturally occurring in fruits and vegetables having a deep red color. With their extra deep red color, vine ripened cranberries are a great source of these healthy nutrients. They are also high in Vitamin C.

Todays Health Comments

The question … Why eat more cranberries, should be obvious to us after today’s health facts. The cranberry offers many health benefits if we were to include it in our regular eating habits. For most people it seems to appear during the holiday season only and forgotten, there after. I find the need to use the cranberry on my turkey sandwich anytime of the year. I also use the cranberry supplement from time to time. This article is continuation of three parts, the other two will cover Urinary Tract and Cranberries, and Cranberry Juice. Why Eat more Cranberries? A healthier life!
